Bat tests positive for rabies on Walpole Island; health centre issues warning

A bat found on Walpole Island has tested positive for rabies, according to a notice from the Walpole Island Health Centre.

The bat was collected on Monday, July 14, and tested positive the following day. Health officials are also investigating a suspected rabid raccoon found dead on Friday, July 18. Results are pending.

The health centre is reminding residents to avoid contact with wild or aggressive animals and to take steps to protect themselves, their families and pets from exposure to the virus.

Rabies is nearly always fatal once symptoms appear. Any contact with a rabid animal—including a bite, scratch, or even contact with saliva—should be treated seriously, the notice said.

Residents are urged to report unusual wildlife behaviour, avoid feeding or approaching wild animals, and ensure pets are vaccinated. Pet food should not be left outdoors, and physical contact with unfamiliar animals should be avoided.

If a person or pet comes into contact with a potentially rabid animal, medical attention should be sought immediately. Suspected rabies cases or bites can be reported to Lambton Public Health at 519-383-8331, Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
