The Essex County Plowmen’s Association is set to host its annual Plowing Match on Saturday, Aug. 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Reaume Farms, located at 5609 Comber Sideroad.
The free family-friendly event will feature a wide range of plowing competitions, with participants from Essex County and across Southwestern Ontario. Spectators can expect to see everything from antique plows to large modern rollovers in action.
One of the day’s highlights will be the Queen of the Furrow competition — a leadership program for young women aged 18 to 25. Participants will be judged on their plowing ability, agricultural knowledge, public speaking, and interview skills. Representing Essex County this year is Danielle Gagnon, who will compete and meet with attendees throughout the day.
Other attractions include a “Kids Zone” sponsored by the Lally Auto Summer Fun Patrol, as well as garden tractor plowing for children. Attendees can also enjoy agricultural displays, demonstrations, and farm wagon rides around the site.
Food will be available for purchase, with the Rotary Club of Essex serving breakfast and lunch.
The day will conclude with an awards dinner at 5 p.m. at Visitation Church, located next to the match site. The dinner will recognize top plowing competitors, honour sponsors, and include scholarship presentations to three local students. Tickets can be purchased at the event or reserved in advance by contacting Murray McLeod at 519-890-4765.
Organizers say there will be plenty to see and do for all ages at this annual celebration of farming and rural tradition.
