Huron Shores Area Transit announces fare changes, equity discounts

Huron Shores Area Transit is set to introduce its first system-wide fare adjustment since 2020, with changes taking effect August 15.

The updated fare structure will see local rides increase to $6, long-distance trips to $12, and regional fares to $20. The increases are part of a five-year plan to meet financial targets and ensure sustainable service for transit partner communities, including Lambton Shores, South Huron, Bluewater, Plympton-Wyoming, and Kettle & Stony Point First Nation.

To offset the impact on vulnerable riders, HSAT is rolling out a new fare equity strategy that offers Smart Card-based discounts to eligible residents. Children 12 and under will continue to ride free with a Child Smart Card, while support persons accompanying a registered passenger with a disability will also ride free through a Support Person Pass. CNIB cardholders will be eligible for a free annual transit pass.

Seniors aged 65 and older, as well as Canadian veterans, will receive 20 per cent off pre-paid Smart Cards and monthly passes. Riders with low incomes can apply for a deeply discounted annual pass with proof of eligibility through a food bank, Ontario Works, ODSP, or a social housing provider.

The CNIB, senior/veteran, and income-based discount passes are available only to residents within HSAT’s participating communities.

Officials say the fare changes are designed to balance affordability and sustainability, while improving data collection and funding insight through increased Smart Card usage.

Smart Cards can be ordered online at HuronShoresAreaTransit.ca, by calling 519-243-1400 ext. 8108, or in person at the Lambton Shores Municipal Office in Thedford.

For route and schedule information or to speak to a live operator about trip planning, riders can call 1-888-465-0783 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily.
