Wildfire smoke continuing to impact southern Ontario’s air quality

Smoke from forest fires is expected to continue affecting much of southern Ontario tonight, with conditions lingering into Monday in some areas.

A special air qualit statement remains in effect for Chatham-Kent and Sarnia-Lambton.

Environment Canada says the smoke is causing or expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility. Air quality and visibility can fluctuate quickly and vary significantly from one location to another.

As smoke levels rise, health risks increase. People are advised to limit outdoor activities, particularly strenuous ones. Vulnerable populations—including seniors, infants, people with existing illnesses or chronic conditions, and those who work outdoors—should take extra precautions.

Mild symptoms may include eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches or coughing. More serious symptoms such as wheezing or chest pain may also occur. Anyone experiencing severe symptoms should seek medical attention.

Residents are encouraged to keep windows and doors closed, use high-quality air filters indoors, and consider wearing a well-fitting respirator-type mask such as a NIOSH-certified N95 if outdoor exposure is necessary.

The alert was issued by Environment Canada and the Province of Ontario.
