Fundraiser launched after Walpole Island family injured in Michigan crash

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support a Walpole Island family after a serious crash in Michigan left multiple relatives injured.

Organizer Derek Sands said his cousin Michael remains in intensive care with severe injuries, including a broken hip, broken femur and multiple lacerations. He is currently in an induced coma and on a breathing tube.

“What was supposed to be a simple back-to-school shopping trip has turned into a heartbreaking crisis,” Sands said.

The children involved were also taken to hospital in Detroit for treatment and later released. Sands said Michael’s mother, known to many as Auntie Twiss, along with her daughter Michaela, were also injured but have since been discharged.

Michael’s mother has remained by his side in Michigan. Sands said the family is now under both emotional and financial strain as they cover the costs of travel, accommodations, meals and ongoing care until Michael can be transferred home or to Sarnia hospital.

“We are asking for donations to help support them during this difficult time,” Sands said. “Any support, big or small, means the world to us.”

The fundraiser launched Sept. 1 and has already raised $5,600 toward its $6,500 goal.

“Chi-Miigwech, thank you for keeping Michael, Auntie and our family in your prayers,” Sands said.
