Firefighters spent several hours Tuesday evening battling a large blaze involving a landfill and dumpster on Walpole Island.
The Walpole Island Fire Department said the fire required multiple loads of water and a prolonged effort before it was fully extinguished.
Although the flames are out, officials warned residents that lingering smoke and odour may continue in the area until weather conditions help clear it.
The department also urged community members not to burn garbage at the landfill.
“We thank the community for your patience and understanding,” the fire department said in a statement.
