Charges laid after loaded shotgun, stolen plates found during traffic stop

Sarnia Police Service officials allege: A 23-year-old man is facing multiple firearm and property-related charges after police discovered a loaded shotgun and stolen licence plates during a late-night traffic stop.

Around 11:34 p.m. on October 8, an officer observed a small pickup truck travelling on London Road west of East Street. Police determined the licence plates on the vehicle had been reported stolen three days earlier.

The driver, apparently aware of the officer’s presence, made several turns before stopping at Germain Park, where the officer conducted a traffic stop. The driver was arrested for possession of stolen property, and a search that followed uncovered 22 live 12-gauge shotgun cartridges and a loaded 12-gauge pump-action shotgun with a defaced serial number and the safety set to off.

The 23-year-old Sarnia resident was charged with possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, several firearm-related offences including unauthorized possession, careless transport, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He was held for a bail hearing and has since been remanded into custody.
