Drug trafficking charges laid in Chatham following foot pursuit

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: A 19-year-old Chatham man is facing multiple charges after police seized cocaine valued at $35,000 during an arrest on October 15.

Around 8:14 p.m., Chatham-Kent Police Service officers observed an interaction between two individuals in a parking lot on Grand Avenue West. When officers approached, one of the individuals fled on foot while carrying a bag.

Police say the man attempted to discard the bag during the brief foot chase. Officers recovered it and found 349 grams of cocaine, a digital scale, and a large amount of Canadian currency inside.

The suspect was arrested and charged with possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking. Further investigation revealed he was bound by a release order with several conditions, leading to three additional charges of failing to comply with a release order.

He remains in custody pending a bail hearing.
