OPP officials allege: Ontario Provincial Police officers in Essex County are now equipped with body-worn cameras as part of a regional rollout aimed at increasing transparency, accountability and public safety.
Following the successful introduction of in-car cameras with automated licence plate recognition systems, the new body-worn cameras will be issued to each officer in the county and throughout the OPP’s West Region.
The devices are mounted on the front of officers’ vests and are easily visible during interactions with the public. When in standby mode, the cameras display a green ring with flashing lights, which turn red once recording begins.
Officers who have completed training will begin using the cameras immediately, with full deployment expected to be completed soon.
The Essex County OPP said the initiative reflects its ongoing commitment to proactive and innovative policing in partnership with the community.
