With temperatures dropping across the province, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding motorists to take proactive steps to stay safe on the roads this winter.
The OPP says a few precautions can significantly reduce the risk of collisions during icy and snowy conditions. Drivers are encouraged to install winter tires, schedule routine maintenance checks, and make sure brakes, batteries, fluids, windshield wipers and defrosters are all in good working order. Keeping an emergency kit with blankets, a flashlight, and non-perishable snacks is also recommended.
Slippery roads, reduced visibility, and rapidly changing weather require extra caution, the OPP said. Drivers are urged to adjust their speed to match conditions, remain alert, and increase their following distance, particularly in snowy or icy weather.
The OPP also reminds motorists to avoid sudden braking, use headlights in low-visibility situations, and clear all snow from their vehicles before driving.
“Give yourself extra time to reach your destination and be respectful of other road users,” the OPP advised. Before heading out, drivers are encouraged to check the Ministry of Transportation’s Ontario 511 Traveller Information Service for up-to-date highway conditions and monitor local radio for updates.
