A snow squall warning is in effect for Chatham-Kent as lake effect snow continues to impact the region tonight.
Environment Canada says local snowfall totals could reach between 15 and 30 centimetres before the squalls taper off overnight. The weather agency reports that snow bands forming off Lake Huron have extended toward Elgin County and areas east and northeast of Chatham.
The heavy snow and strong winds are causing hazardous travel conditions, with visibility expected to drop to near zero at times. Motorists are being warned to prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating road conditions, particularly along portions of Highway 401, which may be affected.
The snow activity is expected to shift east of the area later tonight. Residents are encouraged to monitor Environment Canada alerts and forecasts for updates.
