Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: A 29-year-old Chatham-Kent man is facing arson and mischief charges after a fire was set behind a St. Clair Street business Thursday night.
Police were called around 7 p.m. on Nov. 13 after witnesses reported a man trying to ignite items stuffed inside a downspout at the rear of the building. The suspect fled on foot and the small fire was extinguished, but not before causing damage to the structure.
A short time later, police received another complaint about a man damaging a phone box at Lacroix Street and Grand Avenue West. CCTV footage linked the same suspect to both incidents, police said.
Officers located the man and arrested him. He is charged with arson — disregard for human life, and mischief under $5,000. He remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
