Harriet Jacobs

Harriet Jacobs, a member of Walpole Island First Nation, passed away peacefully at Meadow Park in Chatham on Sunday, November 16, 2025 at the age of 88.

Harriet was the daughter of the late Ford and Emaline (Johnson) Soney. Beloved mother of Janine Kewayosh (Steven) and the late Robert Jacobs (Krystal).

Dear grandmother of Stephen, Seth and Jordan Kewayosh and Brianne Jacobs, Lora Jacobs-Smith (Bobby), Joe Jacobs and Brendan Sands.

Great grandmother of 7 (predeceased by Dawn and Joy) and many great great grandchildren. Sister of John Soney (the late Carol), Nancy Williams (the late Thomas) and the late Mayme Soney.

Harriet was the first supervisor for the Walpole Island Day Care Centre. Seven years later, Harriet would become the Native Studies teacher at Wallaceburg District Secondary School, encouraging and empowering youth to succeed in their academic and personal successes for over 29 years.

In that time, she established the Culture Club, now known as the Future Elders Club. Harriet also coached baseball, volleyball and basketball, often driving the students to events. Upon her retirement in 2004, the Native Studies Office was renamed the Harriet Jacobs Centre at WDSS. Harriet also loved golf and watching football and her doors were always open for those in need.

Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation at the Haycock-Cavanagh Funeral Home, 409 Nelson Street in Wallaceburg from 11 am to 1 pm on Friday, November 21 with the celebration of Harriet’s life to follow at 1 pm.
