A grassroots holiday tradition is returning this weekend as The Gift celebrates its sixth year of bringing communities together to support local families.
On Nov. 22, residents across the municipality are encouraged to leave non-perishable food, hygiene products, new toys and other essentials on their doorstep by noon. Volunteers will collect donations from homes across Chatham-Kent and distribute them to families, agencies and individuals needing support during the holiday season.
Hand-painted signs created by residents — from schoolchildren to seniors — have appeared throughout the community as reminders of the upcoming collection day.
“The Gift shows the true heart of Chatham-Kent,” said Sherry Carter, Chatham Community Captain. “Every can of food, every toy, every volunteer — when we each give a little, we create something extraordinary together. This day belongs to all of us.”
Organizers say volunteers of all ages are welcome, with roles ranging from painting signs to sorting items to driving collection routes.
“Our community has a remarkable way of showing up for one another,” said volunteer Fannie Vavoulis. “The Gift is a reminder that giving is powerful. Every contribution helps brighten someone’s holiday season.”
