Chatham man arrested after fentanyl, cocaine and firearm seized in drug investigation

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: A 34-year-old Chatham man is facing several drug and firearm-related charges after police seized fentanyl, cocaine, cash and a sawed-off rifle during an investigation on Wednesday.

Members of the Chatham-Kent Police Service Intelligence Unit executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act warrant at a Riverview Drive residence on Nov. 26 as part of an ongoing drug investigation. Police said officers saw the man leave his home around 2:15 p.m. and get into a vehicle. He was stopped a short distance away and arrested for possession of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking.

A search of the man resulted in the seizure of nearly 34 grams of fentanyl and more than 4.5 grams of crack cocaine.

Officers executed the search warrant at the residence shortly before 2:40 p.m. Police said a systematic search turned up additional drugs, including more than 39 grams of fentanyl and 66 grams of cocaine, along with digital scales, packaging materials, debt lists, Canadian currency and a sawed-off .22-calibre rifle. Police estimate the street value of the seized drugs at about $21,600.

The man is charged with possession of fentanyl and cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, careless storage of a firearm, possession of a prohibited firearm, possessing a firearm while unauthorized, possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order, and failing to comply with probation. He remains in custody pending a bail hearing.

Police said the service remains committed to disrupting drug trafficking operations and removing illegal substances and weapons from the community.
