A rainfall warning has been issued for Chatham-Kent as Environment Canada forecasts heavy rain beginning Sunday morning and continuing through Sunday night, with localized flooding possible in some areas.
Environment Canada says total rainfall and freezing rain amounts of 20 to 40 millimetres are expected, with locally higher amounts of up to 50 millimetres possible. The warning is classified as high impact, with moderate forecast confidence, as frozen ground conditions will limit the ability of the soil to absorb the rainfall.
Rain is expected to begin Sunday morning and become heavy at times through the afternoon and evening. Precipitation may start as freezing rain but is forecast to quickly transition to rain, with little ice accretion anticipated. Forecasters also note a risk of isolated thunderstorms across extreme southwestern Ontario and along the Lake Erie shoreline. The rain is expected to ease late Sunday night.
Environment Canada warns that localized flooding is possible and that some roads may become impassable. Motorists are advised not to drive through flooded roadways and to avoid low-lying areas. Residents are also urged to stay away from rivers, creeks and culverts during the rainfall event.
The public is encouraged to continue monitoring weather alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. Severe weather reports can be submitted by email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca
