OPP officials allege: The Walpole Island Police Service, with the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police, is investigating a death on Squirrel Island Road.
Police say that on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, at approximately 8:05 a.m., members of Walpole Island Police Service and the Lambton County detachment of the OPP responded to a reported disturbance involving a firearm on Squirrel Island Road on Walpole Island First Nation.
When officers arrived, they located an individual suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
The victim, a 29-year-old individual of Walpole Island First Nation, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
As a result of the investigation to date, one individual was taken into custody without incident.
The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sarnia on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2026.
Police say there is no additional threat to public safety.
The investigation is ongoing under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, in conjunction with the Walpole Island Police Service, the Lambton County OPP Crime Unit, the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
