Another apartment fire at 99 McNaughton Ave. W. in Chatham displaces tenants, investigation underway

Fire crews responded to a structure fire at an apartment building at 99 McNaughton Ave. W. in Chatham on Thursday afternoon after reports of smoke in the hallways.

Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue was called to the scene at about 4:05 p.m., with crews from Stations 1 and 2 responding. Firefighters located an apartment fire and called two general alarms along with an upstaff response. Crews quickly knocked down the blaze and were able to contain the fire to a single unit on the second floor.

The church across the street was opened to provide temporary shelter for evacuees, while staff from Housing Services and Fire Administration attended to assist tenants. Residents from the second-floor D block were not permitted to return to their units Thursday night.

No injuries were reported. The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office is scheduled to attend Friday morning to conduct an investigation, and Chatham-Kent police are holding the scene.
