LKDSB releases updated accessibility plan focused on inclusive schools and workplaces

The Lambton Kent District School Board has released an updated multi-year accessibility plan aimed at strengthening inclusive, barrier-free learning and working environments across the system.

The plan, titled Every Door Open: A Plan for Accessible and Equitable Learning and Working Environments, outlines the board’s progress over the past three years and sets priorities for accessibility improvements from 2026 to 2029. LKDSB says the document reinforces its commitment to ensuring students, staff, families and visitors can access equitable and inclusive environments at all school and administrative sites.

Grounded in the principles of dignity, independence, integration and equal opportunity, the plan reflects the board’s obligations under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, the Ontario Human Rights Code and related legislation. It details recent work to improve physical accessibility in schools, enhance inclusive practices and strengthen training and policies across the organization.

Director of Education Gary Girardi said accessibility remains an ongoing responsibility for the board. “We are deeply committed to moving forward with transparency, purpose, and accountability,” Girardi said. “Every Door Open is an important guide that helps us stay focused on creating safe, inclusive, and barrier free spaces for every individual who learns, works, and visits our schools. This responsibility is integral to who we are as a public school board.”

Between 2022 and 2025, LKDSB reported making a range of improvements, including conducting accessibility audits, upgrading entrances, sidewalks and washrooms, expanding accessible design features in school buildings, improving transportation protocols and strengthening inclusive practices related to student transitions, employment procedures and communication. The board also noted ongoing training for staff related to accessibility and human rights.

Looking ahead, the updated plan identifies strategies to further enhance accessibility, including maintaining compliance with digital accessibility standards, supporting inclusive employment practices, ensuring new builds and renovations meet accessibility requirements, expanding transportation supports and continuing to review policies and professional learning with an accessibility lens.

LKDSB said accessibility work is shaped by ongoing consultation and feedback from staff, students, families and community partners, and the plan will be monitored and updated regularly to support continued progress.

“Ensuring accessibility is not a single initiative—it is a commitment embedded in every decision we make, every space we enhance, and every interaction within our system,” Girardi said. “We want all members of our community to feel welcome, supported, and valued when they walk through our doors.”

More information, including the full accessibility plan, is available through the LKDSB website.
