LKDSB adds new salt spreaders to boost winter safety, launches naming contest

The Lambton Kent District School Board is investing in two new salt spreaders to improve winter maintenance and keep students, staff, and visitors safe across its schools.

Recent winter weather in Sarnia-Lambton and Chatham-Kent has made playgrounds, sidewalks, and blacktops slippery and challenging to navigate. The new machines, dedicated to the north and south regions, will allow facilities teams to respond more quickly to freezing conditions, reducing overnight ice build-up and improving traction on school grounds.

“This is a smart and proactive investment that supports the safety and well-being of our students and staff,” said Associate Director Brian McKay. “These machines will significantly enhance our ability to respond to changing weather conditions and maintain safe school environments across the district.”

To celebrate the new equipment, LKDSB is inviting all classes to take part in a “Name Our Salt Spreader” contest. Each class can submit one name, which will be posted on the LKDSB website for community voting. The winning names, one for Sarnia-Lambton and one for Chatham-Kent, will be displayed on the respective salt spreader’s carrier truck. The classes behind the winning submissions will also receive a pizza party.

Submissions are open until February 10, with community voting running from February 11 to 17. Winners will be announced Thursday, February 19. LKDSB encourages all classes to join the contest and help give the new salt spreaders names that reflect the spirit of their school communities.
