Four people have been displaced following a structure fire at a multi-unit residential building on King Street East in Chatham.
Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue responded to 140 King St. E. on Feb. 12, 2026, at approximately 5:40 p.m. Fire crews from Station No. 1 and Station No. 2 in Chatham attended the scene.
Pumper 1 and Ladder 2 arrived to find heavy black smoke and visible flames coming from the rear apartment of the three-unit building. Firefighters secured a hydrant and initiated an aggressive interior attack, bringing the fire under control within minutes.
Crews completed primary and secondary searches of all units and confirmed no occupants were inside at the time of the incident. Firefighters also accessed the attic to check for extension, ventilated the structure and conducted overhaul operations.
The fire was contained primarily to the rear apartment, with smoke spreading into the attic. No injuries were reported.
Damage is estimated at $180,000. Four individuals have been displaced.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Fire officials thanked Entegrus, Enbridge, EMS, Public Works and the Chatham-Kent Police Service for their assistance at the scene.
