House fire causes $200,000 damage in Chatham

A house fire on West Street caused an estimated $200,000 in damage Tuesday evening.

At approximately 5:15 p.m. on Feb. 17, 2026, Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a fire in the area of West Street and Lorne Avenue.

Crews from Stations 1 and 2 arrived within minutes and found a working fire at a single-family raised ranch home at 136 West St., with flames visible on the rear exterior and extending into the attic.

Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior attack, completed primary and secondary searches and knocked down fire on the exterior of the home. Crews remained on scene to conduct overhaul operations and check for hidden fire in the attic and soffits.

Entegrus and Enbridge attended to secure utilities.

Fire officials said the home sustained significant damage to the exterior and attic. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No injuries were reported.

Victim Services was contacted to assist the affected family, and the property was returned to the homeowner once the fire was fully extinguished.

Fire officials reminded residents of the importance of working smoke alarms, noting the home was equipped with functioning alarms that alerted occupants to the emergency. Firefighters will return to the area as part of an after-the-fire reassurance campaign to check alarms, discuss fire safety planning and answer questions.

Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue also offers free CHiRP Home Safety Checks, where firefighters visit homes to inspect alarms and discuss fire safety with residents.
