A residential structure fire in Blenheim caused an estimated $75,000 in damage Thursday afternoon, but no injuries were reported.
Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue responded to the blaze at approximately 3:57 p.m. on Feb. 26 at 19397 Charing Cross Rd. Crews from stations in Erieau, Raleigh South and Blenheim attended the scene.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke conditions at a large, single-storey multi-unit building that was under renovation. Officials said the size of the structure, its layout and its construction state made it difficult to locate the origin of the fire.
Despite the challenges, crews were able to identify the seat of the fire and bring it under control. Firefighters remained on scene for an extended period to ventilate the building and check for hot spots to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.
During the response, Talbot Trail was temporarily closed as supply lines were stretched across the roadway. Chatham-Kent Police Service assisted with traffic control to maintain a safe operating area.
Additional support was provided by Hydro One and Enbridge Gas to isolate utilities, along with CK EMS.
Damage to the building is estimated at $75,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
