Rainfall warning issued for Chatham-Kent as heavy rain expected

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a yellow rainfall warning for Chatham-Kent as heavy rain is expected to move into the region tonight.

The weather alert, issued Tuesday afternoon, says rain – heavy at times – is forecast to begin Tuesday night and continue through Wednesday.

Forecasters say rainfall totals of 20 to 40 millimetres are expected, with locally higher amounts possible in areas that receive thunderstorms.

“Rain, heavy at times is expected. The saturated or frozen ground will have little ability to absorb this rainfall.”

Environment Canada said a series of low-pressure systems moving through southern Ontario will bring the rainfall, raising concerns about localized flooding.

Water is expected to pool on roads and in low-lying areas, particularly because the ground remains saturated or frozen and cannot absorb much additional moisture.

Drivers are being warned not to travel through flooded roadways and to avoid low-lying areas. Officials also advise watching for potential washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.

Residents seeking information about flooding are encouraged to consult their local conservation authority or the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. Additional details are available at Ontario.ca/floods.

Environment Canada is urging residents to continue monitoring weather alerts and forecasts. Severe weather reports can be sent by email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca
or posted on X using the hashtag #ONStorm.
