Working hard vs. chasing dreams

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

We have all heard the leadership gurus preach a message of chasing after your dreams, and there is much truth in that advice.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Nevertheless, we also need to pay attention to discipline in order to achieve those dreams.

Hard work is definitely a prerequisite to meeting our life goals and accomplishing our dreams.

Look at what it says in Proverbs 12:11: “He who tills his land will be satisfied with bread, but he who follows frivolity is devoid of understanding.”

In other words, results come to the one who is willing to work for it, while laziness and goofing off lead nowhere.

I like how this same verse of Scripture is rendered in a modern paraphrase called “The Message”, which says, “The one who stays on the job has food on the table; the witless chase whims and fancies.”

I can remember back in my final year of seminary during the final exams that year of an incident that almost cost me dearly. I

was tired of studying and wanted a break, but a short break wasn’t going to cut it for me.

I started reading a book someone had gifted me that was full of several collections of cartoon strips.

After about an hour my roommate came over to me and jerked the slack out of my chain.

He reminded me that the pain and suffering of the studying was only temporary, and would soon be over, but if I didn’t buckle down I could lose a semester’s worth of hard work.

Lesson learned!

We make choices every day to either stay on the job or chase whims and fancies.

What choice will you make today?
