The Racing Against Drugs program will return to the community April 13 to 17 at Erickson Arena, offering drug and alcohol awareness education to local students.
Developed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the program uses the theme of auto racing to deliver safety and healthy-living messages. Approximately 220 Grade 5 students will attend each day, with participants from 33 schools across Chatham-Kent taking part throughout the week.
Students will rotate through interactive stations led by community partners, covering topics such as substance use awareness, the risks of smoking and vaping, injury prevention and healthy lifestyle choices. Each day will conclude with racing activities aimed at promoting teamwork and positive decision-making.
“This program allows us to engage students in a fun and memorable way while reinforcing critical safety and prevention messages,” said Amanda Wyatt, chairperson of the Racing Against Drugs Chatham-Kent chapter. “The support of our community partners helps ensure this important program continues for local students.”
The program is offered to schools at no cost and relies on community support and sponsorships.
Organizers said the event is being coordinated with volunteers and staff from several local organizations, including Chatham-Kent Community Health Centre, Chatham-Kent EMS, Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue, Chatham-Kent Police Service, CK Public Health, local school boards and other community partners.
