Blenheim school lockdowns lifted after police determine BB gun sparked investigation

Lockdowns at several Blenheim schools were lifted Tuesday after police determined a reported weapon in the community was a BB gun and there was no ongoing threat to public safety.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers were called to the area of Chatham Street South for a report of a male in possession of a long gun. As a precaution, residents were asked to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel while police investigated.

Nearby schools were placed in lockdown during the incident.

According to the Lambton Kent District School Board, Blenheim District High School, Harwich Raleigh Public School and W.J. Baird Public School entered lockdown as administrators followed police direction.

The St. Clair Catholic District School Board said St. Anne Catholic School, along with other nearby schools and businesses, was also placed in lockdown as a precaution.

Police maintained a strong presence throughout the area during the investigation.

Officers later located the individual and the weapon, which was determined to be a BB gun. Police said there is no ongoing threat to public safety but will remain in the area as the investigation continues.

Following that confirmation, lockdowns were lifted and normal activities resumed at all affected schools.

School officials said the safety and well-being of students and staff remain the highest priority and thanked police for their swift response, as well as students, staff, families and the broader community for their cooperation.

The Catholic board added that a compassionate care team would be available to support students and staff who may have been affected by the situation.

Police said updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
