Residents are being reminded to confirm the identity of fire personnel before allowing anyone into their homes, according to Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services.
The notice comes as the department continues its CHiRP Home Alarm Check visits, a program aimed at improving household safety.
Fire officials say legitimate staff will always arrive in full department-issued uniform and in a clearly marked fire department vehicle when conducting visits.
They are warning the public not to grant access to anyone claiming to be from the fire department who arrives in civilian clothing or a personal vehicle.
“If an individual claiming to be from the Fire Department arrives in civilian clothing or a personal vehicle, do not permit them entry to your home,” the notice states.
“Official personnel will always be equipped with the proper credentials and a clearly marked fire vehicle.”
Officials add that residents should deny entry and contact the department directly to verify the visit if there is any uncertainty.
The department says the precautions are part of its commitment to ensuring public safety during in-home visits.
