Update at 1:45 p.m. from the Municipality of Chatham-Kent: Municipal officials say the gas incident on Scane street in Chatham is now resolved.
“Crews from Enbridge were able to locate the leak and stop it,” officials stated.
“The leak was caused by a loose connection on an underground pipe. All residents have now returned to their homes and the loose connection is being repaired.”
Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services officials say repairs to the gas line are now underway.
“The smoke that was seen may have come from the soil heating up,” fire officials say.
Update at 11:37 a.m. from the Municipality of Chatham-Kent: Chatham-Kent emergency services are responding to a gas venting incident on Scane Street in Chatham after gas was reported venting from a lawn in the area.
As a precaution, all homes on Scane Street and a portion of Foster Street were evacuated to the WISH Centre while emergency crews assessed the situation. Residents from all but three homes have since been permitted to return.
Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue Services and Chatham-Kent Police Services remain on scene alongside Enbridge crews. Windsor Hazmat has also been placed on standby as a precautionary measure.
Gas continues to vent at this time and the investigation remains ongoing. Residents are asked to avoid the area to allow emergency personnel to safely continue their work.
“At this time, there is no immediate danger to the broader public.”

Update at 10:44 a.m. from the Chatham-Kent Police Service: Chatham-Kent police are advising the public of an active gas leak in the area of Scane Street in Chatham.
Emergency crews are on scene, with an increased presence of police, fire and utility services as the situation is being addressed.
Police are asking the public to avoid the area of Park Street between Payne Street and Scane Street, as well as the area from St. George Street to St. Patrick Street. Residents on Scane Street and some residences on Foster Street are being evacuated as a precaution.
Roadways in the affected area have been closed with barricades and access is restricted.
“There is no immediate danger to the broader public and updates will be provided as they become available,” police said.
“We appreciate your patience and cooperation.”
