Chatham man dies after being struck by train outside of Chatham

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: A 34-year-old Chatham man is dead after being struck by a passenger train Sunday afternoon in Chatham-Kent.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers responded at approximately 2:08 p.m. on May 10 to reports of a pedestrian struck by an eastbound passenger train near Northwood Line.

Police said emergency measures were taken by the train operator, but the man sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers secured the area while the police service’s Traffic Management Unit investigated alongside railway police and the Office of the Chief Coroner.

The rail corridor was temporarily closed during the investigation before the train was later permitted to continue.

Police said there is no ongoing risk to public safety.

“Out of respect for the family, no further details will be released,” police said in a statement.

“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones affected by this incident,” the statement added. “On behalf of all members, we extend our deepest condolences during this incredibly difficult time, and we ask that the community respect the family’s privacy as they grieve.”
