Chatham man charged after break-and-enter investigation

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: A 47-year-old Chatham man has been charged after police investigating a welfare check discovered evidence of a break and enter at a commercial property in Chatham.

The said officers responded Saturday at about 8:27 p.m. to the area of Wellington Street West.

While canvassing the area, police discovered damage to a nearby commercial property that was consistent with a break and enter.

Police said officers observed shattered glass and evidence of forced entry before locating a suspect asleep inside the business. Officers also recovered property believed to have been stolen within the building.

The accused is charged with break and enter to commit an indictable offence and mischief under $5,000.

Police said the man was transported to police headquarters and held pending a bail hearing.
