‘Transformational project for Wallaceburg’ after Westcourt affordable housing build given the green light

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is moving ahead with a new 72-unit affordable housing development in Wallaceburg following council approval of the project at 199 Westcourt Blvd.

Municipal officials say the five-storey building will be the first new community housing project constructed in Wallaceburg in decades and is intended to help address growing demand for affordable housing across Chatham-Kent.

The development will include a mix of one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom units designed for individuals, seniors and families. Of the 72 units, 50 will be offered at affordable and deeply affordable rental rates.

“This is an exciting and transformational project for Wallaceburg,” said Darrin Canniff.

“Council has made it clear that increasing access to affordable housing is one of our top priorities, and this development is another strong sign that Chatham-Kent continues to grow and invest in its future. Stable, affordable housing creates stronger communities, supports local families, and helps ensure people can continue to build their lives right here in Chatham-Kent.”

The municipality said it has secured more than $18.9 million in external funding contributions for the project through partnerships, grants and support from upper levels of government and housing-focused funding programs.

According to the municipality, more than 1,450 households are currently on Chatham-Kent’s centralized housing waiting list, with approximately 23 per cent seeking housing in Wallaceburg.

Officials estimate the project will accommodate between 122 and 200 residents.

Council approved awarding the construction contract to S.E.M. Construction Limited. Construction is expected to begin in July and take about two years to complete.

Municipal officials said the Wallaceburg project is part of broader efforts to expand affordable housing options throughout Chatham-Kent and support growing communities.
