After two decades of fundraising performances and community support, the 24-Hour Drum Marathon founded by musician Jeff Burrows will come to an end this year, following the death of a close friend and longtime organizer.
Burrows said the decision comes after the loss of Gary Demmans, whom he described as a key part of the annual event’s success.
“It’s not that I’m exhausted. Or haven’t lost my focus. But when you’ve been blindsided by the loss of a very special friend, everything changes.”
Burrows said Demmans had worked alongside him for 20 years as a “master of logistics,” handling equipment setup, coordinating bands and preparing venues for the annual 24-Hour Drum Marathon, which has become both a local entertainment fixture and a major fundraising initiative.
For two decades, the event has raised more than $800,000 for charities across Windsor and Essex County, supporting services related to mental health, food insecurity, addiction recovery and life-altering illnesses. Burrows noted that LiUNA!625 has been a major sponsor of the marathon since 2014.
“Local charities throughout Windsor and Essex County, providing essential services for life-altering illnesses, mental health, food banks, addiction recovery and several other charitable organizations, have shared funds of over $800,000 since our kickoff marathon in 2006,” the release said.
Burrows said this year’s event will serve as a final tribute.
“Now, it’s time to step back and remember Gary. The final Jeff Burrows 20th Annual Drum Marathon will take place, as it has for the past 11 years, at Good Time Charly, Friday and Saturday, May 29/30, 2026.”
He added that the closing edition will feature 15 local bands performing around the clock.
“I’d love to have you join me along with fifteen amazing local bands rocking round the clock. For our community! For Gary!”
