A historic first as WDSS and NCIVS launch inaugural girls field lacrosse teams

High school sports history was made on Wednesday, May 27, when Wallaceburg District Secondary School (WDSS) and Northern Collegiate Institute & Vocational School (NCIVS) faced off in the first-ever local girls field lacrosse game, hosted at WDSS.

The matchup marked a milestone for secondary school athletics in the region, introducing the fast-paced sport to a new generation of female athletes and establishing the foundation for a new competitive program.

The initiative was spearheaded by Brian DeWagner, Tyler White and Drew Sydorko, who worked behind the scenes to bring girls field lacrosse to local schools and help establish the inaugural season.

“Seeing these athletes take the field for the first time is incredibly rewarding,” said the organizing members. “This initiative is entirely focused on development, inclusivity, and fostering a love for the game. We want to give everyone a chance to play, regardless of their experience level.”

The program places a strong emphasis on skill development, teamwork and fair play as many participants are new to the sport. Organizers say they are already looking ahead to future growth, with hopes of expanding participation to additional schools across the district in coming seasons.

Spectators, parents and school staff filled the sidelines to support the athletes, marking what many described as the start of a new local tradition in school athletics.

“Athletics have always been a source of pride in our LKDSB schools, and this first girls field lacrosse game adds an exciting new chapter to that tradition” states LKDSB CEO, Gary Girardi. “We are committed to growing opportunities for student-athletes and ensuring every young person has the chance to participate, compete, and belong.”
