Walpole Island First Nation to pursue custom election code

Walpole Island First Nation Chief and Council say the community will not opt into the First Nations Elections Act and will instead continue developing its own election system.

In a notice to residents, leadership said community engagement will remain central to the process of creating a custom election code tailored to local priorities and values.

Officials said they are seeking input on what community members do and do not like about the current Indian Act election process, opinions on the First Nations Elections Act and suggestions for additional elements or improvements that could be included in a future system.

“Community feedback will be used to help shape a system that reflects our needs, values, and priorities,” the notice stated.

Details about engagement sessions and opportunities for residents to provide feedback are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
