Public meeting in Dresden provides update on York1 landfill proposal (Full Video)

Residents gathered in Dresden on June 24 for a public information meeting on the proposed York1 waste and landfill project and Chatham-Kent’s ongoing efforts to oppose the development.

The meeting, held at the Ken Houston Agricultural Centre, provided an update on the municipality’s advocacy work with provincial officials and outlined information received to date from York1 regarding the proposal.

Here is the full video of the meeting:

Municipal officials told attendees there had been no major developments since previous updates but stressed that Chatham-Kent remains committed to keeping residents informed as the situation evolves.

Speakers, included: Michael Duben, CAO; Mayor Darrin Caniff; Dave Taylor, Deputy CAO; Walpole Island Chief Leela Thomas; Edward Soldo, General Manager of Infrastructure and Engineering Services; Emily Crawford, Director of Legal Services; and Bruce McAllister, General Manager of Development Services.

Due to the technical nature of the proposal, the meeting did not include an open-microphone question period. Instead, questions submitted in advance through the municipality’s Let’s Talk Chatham-Kent platform were addressed during the presentation.

Municipal staff also remained available following the formal session to speak with residents individually and answer additional questions.

Chatham-Kent has continued its advocacy efforts related to the proposed project, which has generated significant public interest and concern in Dresden and across the municipality.
