Heat warning
Environment Canada has issued a high-impact heat warning as a long-duration heat event continues through at least Friday, with the possibility of lasting into the weekend. Daytime highs are expected to range from 31 C to 35 C, with some areas potentially reaching 37 C. Overnight temperatures will remain between 21 C and 25 C, offering little relief. The hottest conditions are expected today through Thursday.
The prolonged heat may also lead to deteriorating air quality, with the Air Quality Health Index potentially approaching the high-risk category. Environment Canada says extreme heat can affect everyone’s health, particularly older adults, people living alone, and others at greater risk of heat-related illness.
Residents are encouraged to drink water frequently, limit time outdoors during the hottest parts of the day, wear lightweight clothing, and seek out air-conditioned or cooler public spaces if needed. Officials also urge people to watch for signs of heat exhaustion, such as headache, dizziness, nausea and fatigue, and to call 911 immediately if someone shows symptoms of heat stroke, including confusion, loss of consciousness, or hot, red skin. Children and pets should never be left unattended in parked vehicles.
