Household hazardous waste collection returns July 7 in Chatham-Kent

Chatham-Kent residents will have another opportunity to safely dispose of household hazardous waste on Tuesday, July 7, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Veolia Environmental Services, 141 Prosperity Way, near Chatham in the Bloomfield Business Park.

The July 7 event is one of five remaining Household Hazardous Waste Days scheduled for 2026. Additional collection days will be held Aug. 11, Sept. 19, Oct. 13 and Nov. 10, each from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Municipal officials remind residents that hazardous materials, including paints, solvents and batteries, should never be placed in household garbage or poured down drains because they can pose risks to people and the environment. Residents are encouraged to follow the “BUD” rule: buy only what is needed, use it all up, and drop off any remaining material at an approved collection site for recycling, reprocessing or safe disposal.

During Household Hazardous Waste Days, residents are asked to remain in their vehicles while staff remove materials. Containers will not be emptied or returned.

In addition to the scheduled collection events, a number of year-round drop-off locations are available throughout Chatham-Kent for specific materials. These include municipal waste depots, Battery Boy, Canadian Tire stores in Blenheim, Chatham, Tilbury and Wallaceburg, Jiffy Lube, Staples, Chatham-Kent Recycling, Habitat for Humanity, Goodwill locations, CS Organics & Cooking Oil Removal, Rona stores in Chatham and Wallaceburg, and other participating collection sites.

The municipality also notes that Ontario’s Resource Productivity & Recovery Authority operates an industry-funded recycling program that allows residents to return designated hazardous and special waste materials to participating municipal depots, retail locations and collection events. Residents are encouraged to contact collection sites in advance to confirm the materials they accept before making a trip.
