Walpole Island First Nation sets nomination, election dates for chief and council

The Council of Three Fires has announced the dates for this year’s chief and council election, with nominations set to open at a public meeting next month.

According to the notice, electors of Walpole Island First Nation (Bkejwanong Territory) will gather at the Governance Building on Saturday, Aug. 8, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. to nominate candidates for one chief position and 12 councillor positions for the next term.

The election is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Governance Building.

The notice states that eligible voters may nominate candidates by submitting a completed mail-in nomination form to the electoral officer before the nomination meeting, or by making nominations in person during the meeting.

Off-reserve voters will receive nomination forms by mail at the addresses on file with the membership office. Those who reside off-reserve and will be unable to vote in person on election day may also arrange with the electoral officer to receive a mail-in ballot. Ballot packages for off-reserve voters are scheduled to be mailed beginning Aug. 17.

The notice is signed by electoral officer Vaughn Johnston and is dated July 2.
