Heat warning
Environment Canada has issued a Yellow Heat Warning for Chatham-Kent starting Monday, July 13, 2026. Temperatures are expected to reach 30–37°C, with overnight lows of 20–24°C and humidex values of 38–45. The heat will peak Tuesday, with highs near 37°C in southwestern Ontario, the Greater Golden Horseshoe, and eastern Ontario, before easing off Wednesday or Thursday evening. Poor air quality is also expected, potentially reaching high-risk levels on the Air Quality Health Index.
The warning urges people to check in on older adults, people living alone, and others at higher risk of heat illness. It describes heat exhaustion symptoms (headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine, fatigue) and stresses that heat stroke — marked by red/hot skin, dizziness, confusion, or altered consciousness — is a medical emergency requiring an immediate call to 911, with cooling measures (shade, removing clothing, cold water/ice) applied while waiting for help.
Recommended precautions include staying hydrated before feeling thirsty, keeping living spaces cool (blinds closed, fans/AC on, or moving to a cooling centre, library, or shaded park if needed), scheduling outdoor activity for cooler parts of the day, wearing light, loose clothing, and never leaving anyone — especially children or pets — in a parked vehicle. The alert also notes added risk if heat coincides with wildfire smoke, and directs people to Health Canada resources for more detail, plus instructions for reporting severe weather to Environment Canada.
