Strong character stands out

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Back in early June I heard about an incident on a baseball diamond involving a young girl from our church.

A bad call was made by the umpire in her last time at bat which resulted in this girl’s team losing the game.

Her coaches and other players reacted very strongly, berating the umpire and even using profanity.

But that was not how this girl reacted.

She remained calm and simply walked away from this drama.

It is rare these days, especially in competitive sports, to see such strong character show up in unlikely circumstances.

Proverbs 16:32 says, “He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.”

Emotions are part of who we are, but they can get the better of us when we lose control of them.

One thing that often accompanies an outburst of emotions is the overuse of words.

Consider Proverbs 17:27-28: “He who has knowledge spares his words, and a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.

Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; when he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive.”

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the fewer the words that come from our mouths in a time of pressure, the better off things will be in the end.

Kudos to this young lady for displaying such strong character in the time of testing.

Let’s learn from her example and do likewise.
