West Region members of the Ontario Provincial Police laid 1,815 charges following 2,107 traffic stops across the region during a Civic Holiday long weekend traffic campaign.
The campaign ran from July 31 to August 3 and focused on driving behaviours that contribute to traffic collision deaths, injuries and property damage, including speeding, failure to wear a seatbelt, distracted driving and impaired driving. Police also enforced Ontario’s Move Over law, which is designed to give emergency personnel safe space to assist motorists and conduct roadside work.
Results across West Region included 856 speeding charges, 178 seatbelt charges, 14 distracted driving charges, 45 impaired driving charges and 11 Move Over charges.
“14 people have died in speed-related collisions in West Region so far this year. Speeding remains a leading contributor in crashes, fatalities and injuries across Ontario. Our officers will continue to educate drivers and make speed enforcement a priority in the communities we serve,” said Acting Traffic Inspector Tara Bolstad, OPP West Region Traffic Safety and Marine Manager.
