OPP officials allege: Members of the Lambton Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police are seeking witnesses and dashcam footage following an incident involving a motorist who fled a traffic stop.
Police say that on Friday, Aug. 28, 2026, at approximately 5:08 p.m., officers were conducting a seatbelt check near Main Street and Kitchener Avenue in Grand Bend when a motorist fled the stop, nearly striking several pedestrians.
The vehicle then travelled to Oak Street, where five officers were conducting a RIDE program. Police say the suspect vehicle drove through the spot check, nearly striking three uniformed OPP officers. No injuries were reported.
The suspect was later located by police and taken into custody.
A 36-year-old Grand Bend man has been charged under the Criminal Code with three counts of assault with a weapon and one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
He is also charged under the Highway Traffic Act with failing to stop for police, failing to properly wear a seatbelt, causing unnecessary noise, driving a motor vehicle with no licence, and performing a stunt while driving.
Lambton OPP is asking anyone who witnessed the vehicle at or around the time of the incident, or who has dashcam or surveillance footage from the area, to call police at 1-888-310-1122 with reference number E261246836.
