Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: A Chatham man has been charged with disarming a peace officer after police say he grabbed an officer’s duty firearm while being questioned about suspicious behaviour in Wallaceburg.
Members of the Chatham-Kent Police Service responded Wednesday at approximately 9:08 p.m. to a report of a suspicious person entering private properties in the area of Knight Street. Officers located the man in the front yard of a residence on Old Glass Road.
While speaking with him regarding his behaviour, the man allegedly reached toward an officer and grabbed the officer’s duty firearm. Officers immediately attempted to take control of the man, who police say resisted arrest by refusing commands and physically preventing officers from placing him in handcuffs.
As a result of the incident, a 33-year-old Chatham man was arrested and charged with disarming a peace officer, resisting a peace officer and failing to comply with a probation order.
The accused was transported to Chatham-Kent Police headquarters and held pending a bail hearing.
