The Ontario Provincial Police is reminding the public to stay vigilant and verify information after continuing to receive reports of the so-called grandparent scam in Essex County.
The scams, also known as emergency scams, typically involve a phone call to a victim claiming that a loved one is in trouble with police or the courts and that a payment is needed to help them out.
Police say staying informed is one of the best ways to avoid becoming a victim of fraud.
Anyone who has been targeted by this type of fraud is asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

Residents who receive a fraudulent call, text or email, or who have been a victim of fraud, are encouraged to report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by calling 1-888-495-8501 or visiting the centre’s website.
Anyone with information about a fraud is asked to contact the OPP immediately at 1-888-310-1122. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
