With the new school year underway, the Chatham-Kent Police Service is reminding parents to think about privacy before posting first-day-of-school photos online.
The service recommends including only a child’s first name or nickname on any sign used in the photo, and says details such as grade, year or milestones, including career aspirations, can be added safely. It also suggests using props, colours or themes that reflect a child’s personality and taking photos in a location that cannot be identified, such as a yard, a park or indoors.
Police are advising against including a child’s full name, school name, teacher’s name or address in a photo or caption, and against showing identifiable street signs, house numbers or licence plates. The service also cautions against sharing personal schedules, such as when a child walks home alone, and against posting in public forums without checking privacy settings.
“Share the milestone. Protect their privacy,” the service said in its post.
