Members of the Ontario Provincial Police West Region laid more than a thousand speeding charges during this year’s Labour Day traffic safety campaign.
The campaign targeted the “Big Four” bad driving behaviours: aggressive driving, failure to wear a seatbelt, distracted driving and impaired driving, which OPP say remain the leading contributing factors to death, injury and property damage on Ontario roads and highways.
Between September 4 and September 7, 2026, OPP West Region officers conducted 2,330 traffic stops and laid 2,142 charges, compared to 2,155 stops and 1,601 charges over the same period last year.
Featured charges included 1,004 for speeding, up from 814 last year, 37 for stunt driving, up from 27, 172 for seatbelt violations, up from 123, 11 for distracted driving, up from five, and 52 for impaired driving, roughly in line with 50 last year.
OPP West Region Command thanked drivers who made the right choice to drive safely, and said the service remains committed to ensuring the safety of Ontario’s roads and highways year-round.
