The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is advising residents that the Lord Selkirk Bridge in Wallaceburg has reopened to vehicular traffic ahead of schedule, following work to address a mechanical issue that had required the bridge to be closed for public safety.
The bridge had originally been expected to reopen on Sept. 25, but the municipality said the work progressed ahead of schedule, allowing it to reopen earlier than anticipated.
While the bridge was closed and a detour was in place, crews removed the abandoned railway tracks on McNaughton Avenue and repaved the roadway.
The bridge will remain inoperable for marine traffic requiring the bridge spans to open.
The municipality thanked residents, businesses and motorists for their patience and understanding while the work was completed, and said it was pleased to reopen the bridge ahead of schedule.
