Update: Youth charged after pellet gun reported near Chatham-Kent Secondary School

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: A 16-year-old youth has been charged after a pellet gun was reported near Chatham-Kent Secondary School on Wednesday.

Chatham-Kent police say they received a report at approximately 9:31 a.m. that students had seen a male pull what appeared to be a handgun from his waistband in the parking lot of the school.

As a precaution, Chatham-Kent Secondary School, King George Public School and McNaughton Avenue Public School were placed under a hold and secure. The schools have since reopened.

Officers located and arrested a 16-year-old youth at a residence in Chatham. The youth was in possession of what was later determined to be a pellet gun.

As a result of the investigation, the youth is facing two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and one count of pointing a firearm. The individual remains in custody pending a bail hearing. In accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the youth’s identity will not be released.

Police say there is currently no ongoing threat to the schools or the surrounding community. The Chatham-Kent Police Service thanked the public for their patience and co-operation during the incident.
