Council directs staff to study extended outdoor baseball season

Chatham-Kent council has directed staff to report back on the interest, feasibility and cost of trialing an extended season for outdoor field bookings in 2027.

The motion, brought forward by Councillor Melissa Harrigan, noted the current baseball season cutoff for field bookings is Oct. 1, despite Chatham-Kent’s climate extending warm weather well into the fall. The motion said extending local baseball seasonal operations could bring more activity, increased participation, and increased tourism and visitors to the municipality.

The report will include potential interest from user groups, as well as a cost model and funding model for an extended season pilot. The motion was approved at the Oct. 5 council meeting.
